Just before totality, the diamond ring effect or Baily's beads effect is a feature of total and annular solar eclipses. As the moon grazes by the Sun during a solar eclipse, the rugged lunar limb topography allows beads of sunlight to shine through in some places and not in others. The name is in honor of Francis Baily who provided an exact explanation of the phenomenon in 1836. The diamond ring effect is seen when only one bead is left.

Baily's Beads
This is a tight crop of a 500mm image. Solar prominences are visible at 1:00 and 3:00. Per Wikipedia, a prominence is a large, bright, gaseous feature extending outward from the Sun's surface, often in a loop shape. Prominences are anchored to the Sun's surface in the photosphere, and extend outwards into the Sun's corona.
Corona
Nope, it's not the beer, though you'd probably want one if you were there. The corona is the atmosphere of the Sun and is millions of times hotter than the surface .
This image was taken at the mid-point of totality and the contrast was adjusted to show the tendrils of the plasma.coronaeclipseatmosphere2017plasmawarp drivebeam me upholy shitend of the worldsacrifice a chickensacrifice a virgin
